Professor Lincoln Edwards, President of Northern Caribbean University
The Northern Caribbean University has delayed the resumption of classes to next Monday.
Radio Jamaica News previously reported NCU was to reopen earlier this week.
President Professor Lincoln Edwards says the delay is because cleanup and restoration works are ongoing.
"We can't open until we are ready. There are a number of things that needed to be in place before the university can be open. We are hoping that the Jamaica Public Service will restore our light to the campus. They have been working in the area, so we expect that they will restore light to us so that we will have that on Monday, and that will ensure that our water supply is adequate and so forth," said the president.
The campus suffered severe damage as heavy winds from Hurricane Melissa blew off roofs and doors and dislocated windows.
The university also experienced flooding.
When classes resume, NCU will join two other universities that have reopened their doors.
Classes began at the University of the West Indies, Mona and the University College of the Caribbean this week.
