New CARICOM passport to be issued in Jamaica

The government is to introduce Jamaica's version of the new CARICOM passport next month.

According to Chief Executive Officer of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), Jennifer McDonald, the document will bear the CARICOM logo and the words "Caribbean Community" on the cover.

The passport will also bear the country's Coat of Arms with the word "Jamaica" as the issuing state beneath.

Ms. McDonald said that Jamaicans will not be disenfranchised in any way in their travels when they use the CARICOM passport.

The CARICOM Passport, which may by used for intra-regional and extra-regional travel, was conceived when Regional Heads of Government agreed on the introductions of the document as a defining symbol of regionalism.

A number of CARICOM states have already introduced the passport including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent and Guyana.

Ms. McDonald said the introduction of the CARICOM passport in January will not interfere with the validity of current passports.

The application process and the application forms for the CARICOM passport will remain the same when applying for a regular passport.

The immigration head said the cost for obtaining it will be the same at $2,500 for adults and $1,500 for minors.
