PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL), the operator of Norman Manley International Airport, is advising that the airport's runway will be temporarily closed Thursday night to carry out critical safety and electrical upgrades.
The run will be closed from 7 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday to facilitate the relocation of the Runway 12 threshold and the installation of switchgear redundancy as part of the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) implementation project.
The airport will shut down after the final flight Thursday evening and normal operations are expected to resume once the work is completed.
PACKAL says the closure and electrical work have already been communicated to the aviation community through the appropriate notices.
There are no flights scheduled during the maintenance window so passenger travel is not expected to be affected.
The runway works form part of a multi-billion dollar upgrade programme valued at about J$11.5 billion or US$72 million to extend the runway and make changes in keeping with the Civil Aviation Act and international aviation safety regulations.
The project will extend the runway by 300 metres, adding safety areas at both ends to create safer conditions for aircraft operations and emergency responses. It is scheduled for completion by July 2027.
