No charges against ship’s crew for cocaine

The police are encountering problems in their investigation of Tuesday's big cocaine bust onboard a foreign vessel at the Kingston Wharves.

Eighty pounds of cocaine with a street value of $65 million was seized on the MV Rothorn, a vessel which originated from Guyana.

The German Captain of the ship and four of his crew members who are Phillipinos, were taken into custody.

But a senior investigator told RJR News that they have not been able to lay any charges against the men due to insufficient evidence.

The investigator explained that the vessel has a crew of 20 which makes it difficult for the cops to say who had control of the cocaine.

The detective added that the five foreigners were interrogated and released but the vessel remains in the custody of the Customs Department, which is now considering laying charges against the Captain for breaches of the Customs Act.

The vessel was destined for Panama when it stopped in Jamaica to pick up containers.

It was raided by members of the contraband enforcement team.
