No release of toilet paper brand names - Ministry of Health

Jamaica's Ministry of Health has decided not to release the names of the brands of toilet paper contaminated with high levels of bacteria. The health ministry had earlier said it was considering making the names of the problem brands public, in response to widespread calls for this to be done. The Bureau of Standards Jamaica had already stated that it did not have legal coverage to make the information public.

Dr Michael Coombs, Chief Medical Officer told RJR News on Tuesday that a decision on whether to release the information would be made after a report was received from the Bureau and the Ministry consulted its legal officers. The report was received on Wednesday.

Dr. Coombs told RJR News Thursday night that the decision was made to keep withholding the names of the affected brands.

“Based on our findings on details analysis of the results of the tests in a report received from the Bureau of Standards it would not be necessary to name the brands because they do not pose any risk in terms of public health based on the findings from the results,” said Dr. Coombs.

He said further investigations will be carried out to determine if there is a link between the bacteria filled toilet paper and complaints of infections.
