An official of the US Embassy in Kingston has stated that there is nothing sinister behind the decision for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to set up offices in Jamaica.
In the wake of last week's announcement by US Ambassador Louis Moreno that the FBI will be establishing offices in Jamaica, Joshua Polacheck, Public Affairs Officer for the US embassy in Kingston, has sought to clear the air.
Mr. Polacheck said there is no conspiracy where the establishment of the office is concerned.
"This is a totally transparent issue... There is no conspiracy, but the lotto scam itself is (stealing) up to a billion dollars a year from American citizens. That's something that raises the attention of the FBI," he outlined.
Mr. Polacheck added that investigations conducted by the FBI in Jamaica will assist in dismantling the lottery scam.
"Our interests overlap and that's why we're working jointly to do it and this is done in complete concurrence with the government of Jamaica. There is nothing in here that we don't do without the full cooperation of the JCF and the government," insisted the embassy representative.
He was speaking on TVJ's Smile Jamaica on Monday.
Meanwhile, Peter Bunting, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, is in favour of the FBI opening an office in Jamaica.
According to him, it will enhance cooperation between Jamaican and US law enforcement over a broad area of potential threats, such as fraud, street crime, organised crime, counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism.
