Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council
The National Road Safety Council is raising concern over the number of motorcyclists who are losing their lives in crashes.
This comes after two motorcyclists died in a head on collision along Cumberland Boulevard in Portmore, St. Catherine on Wednesday.
Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council, said of the 317 people who have lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes, 105 were motorcyclists.
Pointing to data which showed that during one week in September, 75 per cent of those who died were motorcyclists, Dr. Jones said this is a major issue.
The majority of motorcycle fatalities so far have been recorded in Westmoreland with 27, followed by St. Elizabeth, 12, Manchester, 13, and the combined St. Catherine North and South, 13.
Dr. Jones appealed to motorcyclists to wear helmets, which he said could save their lives in the event of a crash.
"Over 90 per cent of those who die on our roads are not wearing helmets. They are speeding, many of them are untrained. The motorcycle that they are driving in many cases is not properly maintained and unsafe," he highlighted.
