NWA Communication Manager Stephen Shaw
The National Works Agency (NWA) says it has started its assessment of critical areas across the country in preparation for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
NWA Communication Manager Stephen Shaw says the agency has been officially notified of the increased funding for the first phase of mitigation works to be undertaken.
Robert Morgan, Minister with responsibility for Works, told the House of Representatives at last month that $172 million has been allocated, with the amount set aside for drain cleaning being doubled.
Several areas have also been earmarked for priority attention.
Speaking Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Mr. Shaw said field work is on in earnest.
"Our parish teams are putting together the programme with a view to moving quickly to especially those areas that we would have flagged as crucial or critical in the start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. It is not meant to be a one-off situation. As you know, we have three different phases that take us through the hurricane season. We have the cleaning prior, we have during, and we have a post-cleaning exercise," he explained.
He said the NWA has also reached out to contractors and established an inventory of pieces of equipment that will be needed and are available in the event of impact from a weather system.
