ODPP responds after Golding suggests office delaying SSL investigation

By Racquel Porter

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has responded to Opposition Leader Mark Golding's assertion that it is dragging its feet in the ongoing investigation into the massive fraud at Stocks and Securities Limited.

Completing his Budget Debate presentation outside Gordon House on Tuesday, Mr. Golding questioned the time it was taking for more people to be charged in the case.

But in a statement Friday, the ODPP said the Financial Investigations Division has not provided additional documents for it to make a ruling.

It said the first set of documents in respect of the continued SSL investigations were submitted to the ODPP in November 2023.

Since then, the ODPP and the FID have had meetings to discuss the file and provide guidance to investigators in relation to the outstanding material.

The ODPP said the last set of documents received from the FID was on March 6, 2024 and thereafter a meeting was arranged for the end of March to discuss all the materials submitted thus far.

In August last year, the Financial Investigations Division told the country that other people will be charged in the case in the coming months, but expressed concern that some affected investors had refused to cooperate with investigators.

So far, former Stocks and Securities Limited wealth advisor Jean-Ann Panton has been charged in the matter.

She returns to court on May 27.

The ODPP said it looks forward to completing its ruling and communicating advice to FID who would subsequently communicate these findings to the public at an appropriate time of their choosing.
