Opposition calls for transparent probe into fatal shooting of child in Granville

 

Opposition Spokesperson on National Security Fitz Jackson is calling for an independent and transparent investigation into an incident in which a four-year-old died after being shot during an alleged shootout between members of the security forces and gunmen in Granville, St. James on New Year's Day. 

 

In a statement on Friday, Mr. Jackson described the killing of the little boy, Romaine Boman, as deeply troubling. 

 

The boy's 68-year-old grandmother was also wounded in the incident. 

 

The circumstances surrounding the operation, which occurred in the Brown's Lane area of the community, have raised questions and prompted protests from residents. 

 

The police reported that two men were fatally shot and a high-powered rifle seized during the operation. 

 

Mr. Jackson said, while the opposition acknowledges the difficult and often dangerous conditions under which law enforcement operates, particularly during the New Year period, the death of a child demands a careful scrutiny and a clear accounting of what transpired. 

 

"No parent should ever have to bury a child and no community should wake up to this kind of anguish. While we recognise the difficult and dangerous work carried out by our security forces, especially during periods when illegal gun salutes are common, the loss of life cannot be ignored or merely explained away. Every Jamaican deserves to feel safe and protected by those sworn to serve us. That is why I'm calling for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation by INDECOM and all relevant oversight bodies. Accountability is essential," he demanded.

 

Mr. Jackson added that the parliamentary opposition wants to see a review of current engagement protocols and meaningful dialogue with community leaders to help prevent similar tragedies.
