The standoff between Jamaica's two main political parties has deepened, as the opposition People's National Party (PNP) has stated that it will not become a part of the new Social Partnership Agreement until its name is changed.

Phillip Paulwell, Leader of Opposition Business, is insisting that the name is an impediment to progress, based on what it represents.

The PNP boycotted the signing of the new agreement at Kings House on Wednesday, because it was previously known as the Partnership for Jamaica but has been changed by the new Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration to the Partnership for a Prosperous Jamaica.

The PNP has taken issue with the name change because one of the words was used as the JLP's election campaign slogan. While this has been viewed by many as being petty, Mr Paulwell has sought to explain the significance. Speaking on RJR's Beyond the Headlines, he said that in the past, governments have had to be careful not to be partisan on this issue; however, with the inclusion of the word "prosperous", the current administration appears intent on continuing to campaign.

The JLP used the slogan "From Poverty to Prosperity" in its successful campaign for the February 25 general election.
