Opposition wants public education campaign on impending plastic ban

By Nakinskie Robinson

Shadow Minister of Environment Senator Sophia Frazer-Binns is urging the government to undertake an intense nationwide public education campaign on the impending ban on single use plastic lunch boxes and personal care products containing microplastics.

The ban was to take effect on June 1 but was pushed back to July 1.

Senator Frazer-Binns says while she unequivocally supports the ban, she is also calling for a further extension accompanied by targeted public engagement.

Mrs. Frazer Binns wants information shared with many consumers who are still unaware of the personal care products which contain intentionally added plastic microbeads or micro plastics.

She adds that several businesses which will be impacted have stated their lack of knowledge on alternatives to the products that will be banned.

The extension, she says, will allow all stakeholders to properly prepare themselves.

Senator Frazer-Binns says a framework must be created where the ban is least disruptive to businesses and individuals.

She argues that the government has not learnt from its mistakes in the first phase, where many people, both consumers and businesses were unprepared.
