The Jamaican Court of Appeal has dismissed the request of former attorney at-law Oswald James to have his sentence quashed.
This means that James' two year sentence has been upheld. On hearing the ruling, he broke down in tears. The former prominent attorney was then led away in handcuffs.
James was sentenced to two years in prison on April 20, 2012 following his conviction on fraud charges in the Corporate Area Criminal Court. He was charged on August 14, 2009 by Fraud Squad detectives, following allegations that he defrauded one of his clients of more than 20 million dollars in a real estate deal.
The complainant, Canadian businessman, Carlton Lewis, lodged a report to the Fraud Squad in June 2009, after alleging that the attorney had failed to return his money.
James was struck from the roll of attorneys in Jamaica in September 2012.
