Parliamentarians urged to mind their manners

House Speaker Delroy Chuck Tuesday gave parliamentarians a lesson in deportment. Responding to a recent newspaper photograph showing West Portland MP Daryl Vaz in the middle of a gaping yawn, the Speaker reminded members that they need to mind their manners.

"Members should recognize that we are like goldfish in a fish bowl so I urge members to note that we must be on our best behaviour and to conduct ourselves in here with what is expected of parliamentary decorum," said Mr. Chuck.

The Speaker also admonished members of the media, and asked that discretion and good taste be employed in the publication of parliamentary happenings.

"This Speaker supports freedom of the press fully and would be the last person to ask for censure of the press. All I am really asking the press is to use good taste to use the freedom that has been given to members of the press and to use it responsibly. Members may have moments of indiscretion and I just ask the press to bear that in mind because it is not complimentary to our parliament," he continued.
