Pig farmer killed by gunmen

A 32-year-old pig farmer, whose battle to save his animals from thieves evoked national attention a few months ago, was on Friday night found dead on his farm in Portmore, St. Catherine.

The body of Greg Gordon, who was given the nickname "Farmer Greg," was discovered shortly before 7 o'clock.

He was shot several times.

Farmer Greg's honest plea for help to make a living through farming captured the hearts of many Jamaicans.

His first cry for help was heard by the Prime Minister who assisted him by providing land for him to rare his animals.

But within months Farmer Greg was back on the air waves as his livelihood was again attacked by praedial thieves.

According to police reports residents reported heard explosions on Friday night and called the police.

"Farmer Greg's" body was later found lying in a pool of blood in one of the pig pens.

Up to late Friday night detectives were combing the farm for clues which could help them identify his killers.

The young enthusiastic pig farmer became somewhat of a celebrity when he was singled out by Prime Minister Bruce Golding late last year.

However, shortly after he was attacked and chopped several times by criminals who continue to prey on his farm.

Some of his animals were also killed.

However, he was not discouraged and continued his pig rearing operations.

And the Minister with responsibility for Information, Daryl Vaz says he is deeply saddened by the death of the young farmer.

Mr. Vaz told RJR News on Saturday afternoon that he was particularly disturbed by the news of Farmer Greg's death as he played an integral role in aiding the farmer to obtain a parcel of land.

He said Farmer Greg was a determined and progressive young farmer who wanted nothing but to progress in his trade and provide for his family.
