Public commentator Germaine Barrett says Prime Minister Andrew Holness's economic policy speech was well-timed as it comes on the cusp of the Jamaica Labour Party's 81st Annual Conference to be held on Sunday.

Mr. Barrett says it was an important conversation to be had with all Jamaicans.

He has also lauded the framing of the country's economic journey and the prime minister's expressed understanding of the concern that the macro-economic achievements are not being felt among some in the population.

"It's a presentation that would not have been appropriate for the conference where you're essentially... charging up the base. It's a conversation that needed to have been had with the Jamaicans at large, encouraging us, inspiring us to aspire for a better Jamaica. I think the Prime Minister articulated quite clearly, quite convincingly, and quite accurately the economic journey of Jamaica, pointing to the pain points of our country with respect to things like FINSAC and the economic shock that has had on Jamaica at large, which ricochets to today," he suggested.

Mr. Barrett has given support to the government's six pillars for the transformation of Jamaica, in particular inclusive growth, which he says should be the direction of the country.

"I think the six pillars that he outlined are actually spot on. I would want to highlight specifically the first one, that of what I call up-skilling training and transforming the education system towards the other end about which he spoke, towards greater productivity, towards peace and prosperity. All of these things are pivotal, and it was appropriate for him to have started with education," he said.

But the commentator noted that, with many Jamaicans having a sense of distrust in government, the Prime Minister will have just months to "work very, very hard" to regain the public's trust.
