Donna Scott Mottley and Mark Golding
Senator Donna Scott Mottley, from the One PNP camp, has reiterated that the leadership challenge in the People's National Party should not have taken place at this time.
Senator Scott Mottley said the contentious statements made during the campaign have left her concerned.
She said the healing process will be difficult as relationships have changed.
"I am thinking ahead past this evening. How can we heal? How can we mediate some of the hurts? How are we going to now move ahead as one PNP? Because at the end of the day, that's what is important. We are not supposed to be turning on each other, we're supposed to be trying to win an election and, Dionne, it's going to be challenging," she said, speaking with Dionne Jackson Miller at the National Arena on Saturday, the day of the election.
She disagreed with the argument that the leadership challenge is justified as the PNP was in need of energy following the loss of two by-elections.
"It is not unprecedented for you to lose a by-election if you are in opposition. In fact, sometimes people feel there's not even any point to the election... You have to understand the psychology of human behaviour and look at the patterns," she insisted.
Not disastrous
But Mark Golding, Chairman of the Rise United team, has disagreed with the assessment that the leadership challenge has been disastrous for the PNP.
"I think that's a bit alarmist. I think everybody knows that this process is naturally one in which there is passion and there's some amount of heat and so on. But once it's over, we have to come back together because the whole point is to resume the movement's mission, which is to lead Jamaica forward and that can only happen if we come back together. So we expect all loyal party members to come on board whichever side prevails," he said.
Mr. Golding added that he is not concerned about a strained relationship with Dr. Peter Phillips after Saturday as their relationship has always been cordial.
