The People's National Party (PNP) has confirmed that Dr. Dayton Campbell will be the party's candidate in Eastern Westmoreland, while Senator Damion Crawford will represent North West St. Catherine in the next general elections.

The nominations were ratified by the party's executive at its meeting on Monday.

The PNP says in consultation with the constituency and divisional leadership in both constituencies, president Mark Golding nominated Dr. Campbell and Senator Crawford to ensure the party's strong presence in the elections.

The party says the initial applicants for the constituencies did not meet the established selection threshold.

It was reported that PNP spokesman on national security Senator Peter Bunting was assigned by the executive to Manchester South.

But PNP chairperson Dr. Angela Brown Burke told Radio Jamaica News that Mr. Bunting's candidacy was not discussed on Monday.

Safe seats?

Reacting to news of the PNP selections, Deputy General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party Dr. Andrew Wheatley criticised the former PNP Members of Parliament for seeking "safe seats" following their election defeats in 2020.

Dr. Wheatley described them as cowardly and disloyal.

He was addressing the May Pen West Divisional Conference on Sunday.
