Police investigation case against former Commander ongoing

There was a new development Tuesday at the corruption trial of former Commander of the St. Catherine North Police Division, Superintendent Harry "Bungles" Daley.

Head of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Assistant Commissioner Justin Felice on Tuesday disclosed that there is now an ongoing police investigation against Superintendent Daley.

He made the disclosure while fielding questions from defence attorneys.

Under fire from the defence, ACP Felice declined to answer some of the questions on the basis that Superintendent Daley is still being investigated by the Police High Command.

He did not give any information on the nature of the ongoing probe.

But during cross examination, ACP Felice acknowledged that no cash or ledgers linking Superintendent Daley to a protection racket were found at his house in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

He then told the court that he did not want to go any further into what was seized at the house.

During his testimony Tuesday, ACP Felice denied suggestions that he had offered rewards to Tafari Clarke, the Linstead businessman who has accused Superintendent Daley of extorting protection money from him.

He admitted that he gave Mr. Clarke $10,000 as a loan to deal with his rent on one occasion, but said the money was later repaid.

ACP Felice further denied having any knowledge that Tafari Clarke was an informant for the British police while he was living in England.

According to the senior cop, he made checks on Mr. Clarke's criminal background when he came to him with the allegations against the Superintendent.

The background checks revealed that he had been sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking in England.

ACP Felice said he placed a wire on Mr. Clarke to prove whether or not the allegations he was making against Superintendent Daley were true.

The court has already heard audio and video recordings of the transactions which reportedly took place between Mr. Clarke and Superintendent Daley.

Over the past couple of hearings, defence attorneys have been hammering at ACP Felice and members of his team who conducted the covert operation which led to the arrest and charge of the policeman.

This as they attempt to unearth flaws in the prosecution's case.

The trial continues Wednesday before the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
