The alleged leader of the notorious Joe
Benbow Gang has reportedly been shot dead.
RJR news was told that Joseph "Benbow" Barrett was fatally injured during a shoot out with the police along the Port Royal Main Road Wednesday morning.
He was reportedly involved in a running gun battle with the lawmen which ended with his death.
Another man was reportedly shot and injured while two guns were recovered by the police.
The incident happened in the vicinity of the Light House on the Palisadoes Main Road.
Barrett, who is accused of illegally importing a shipment of guns into the island, was out on bail.
He had been offered $2 million bail in the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court in May.
He is among four persons charged with importing illegal guns and ammunition into the island in October last year, following the seizure of four nine-millimetre pistols and 26 rounds of ammunition at Customs at the Norman Manley International Airport on October 17.
The Admiral Town based Joe Benbow Gang is linked to several murders and shootings, including a deadly attack along Elgin Road in which three people were killed in August last year.
