The political ombudsman and the general secretaries of the two main political parties are jointly appealing for party supporters to be tolerant and civil in their campaign activities.
A meeting was held on Wednesday between the political ombudsman and the general secretaries of the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party in response to increasing political tension.
Arising from the meeting, both political parties agreed that the display of campaign material is part of the political and electoral process, and each person has the right to participate freely without fear of intimidation from others with opposing views.
The parties agreed that the tearing down and otherwise unauthorised removal of signs, posters, billboards, as well as other instancies of destruction of property is a direct violation of that right and is counterproductive for Jamaica's democracy.
The two main political parties have rejected violence and intimidation in any form, and appealed to all Jamaicans to restore calm and civility to the campaign process ahead of the general election.
