Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has encouraged residents of Job Lane in St Catherine to work with the police to bring the killer of nine year-old Kelsey Ferrigon to justice.
The body of the nine year-old was found in a barrel in her home on Friday after being reported missing.
Prime Minister Holness, Member of Parliament Olivia Grange and members of the Police High Command visited the home of the little girl on Sunday.
The police have identified Giovanni Ellis, otherwise called 'Coolie Man', as a suspect in the gruesome killing of the child.
His mother has appealed for him to surrender to the police without delay.
Prime Minister Holness commended the residents for the support they have been giving to the family as they mourn the loss.
He has also affirming the view that they have sufficient confidence in the capacity of law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice, "and therefore the people will play their role in cooperating, in providing information, in highlighting the problem, in speaking out against the problem, and in ensuring that this does not happen again."
"This is how we build a strong and just society, where law enforcement that have a specific role; they will do their jobs; the public, who will always have the duty to provide information against crime, will support the police."
Police response
Assistant Commissioner Chistopher Phillips, commanding officer for Police Area 5, who was with the Prime Minister, also urged residents not to take matters into their own hands, counseling them to "just trust the police at this time that we will respond in their best interest."
He added that the police are maintaining a strong presence, in the community "until we bring a resolve to this issue."
ACP Phillips revealed as well that the police had spoken to the mother and other relatives of the suspect and were satisfied that they are also dismayed by the rape and killing of the child.
He said the police "continue to assess the risk" that the suspect's relatives might be exposed to and has appealed to members of the community not to target them but allow the investigators to do their job.
