Radio Jamaica News has received confirmation that ceremonial and protocol consultant Colonel Merrick Needham has died.
Colonel Needham died today at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
He created history in 2018 when he became the first Jamaican to receive an honorary commission by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
Colonel Needham has helped to coordinate the logistics of several Royal and State visits.
He was chief executive officer (conferences) at the London-based Commonwealth Secretariat and helped to coordinate heads of government and ministerial-level conferences in a number of countries spanning every continent except Antartica, until he was requested to return to Jamaica by the Government.
Colonel Needham was also an announcer at RJR in the 1950's.
In a recent documentary, Platinum Jubilee-Radio Jamaica at 70, he recounted starting in the station's library, but quickly moving up the ranks to announcer then programmes director.
