The Government is facing another possible challenge to its decision to shutdown the scrap metal trade.
RJR News has been informed that the Office of the Public Defender will be launching an investigation into the indefinite ban on the export of scrap metal.Public Defender, Earl Witter, is to hold a press conference on Wednesday to outline details of the probe.
The export ban was announced a week ago by Industry Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton following an increase in the theft of metal infrastructure.
It could not be ascertained whether members of the Scrap Metal Federation approached the Public Defender seeking his intervention.
The Federation hired the law firm Knight, Junor and Samuels after stating that it's not ruling out a legal fight against the decision to ban exports of scrap metal.
Licensed scrap metal traders have strongly opposed the shutdown pointing to the short notice given as well as the dislocation it has caused to thousands of persons involved in the industry.
The Parliamentary Opposition has also indicated that it is not in favour of the action taken by the Government.
