Mayor of Montego Bay Charles Sinclair said a section of
the multi-million dollar RIU Hotel in St. James will have to be demolished as
the construction is in breach of the parish council's building code.
At the centre of the controversy is the construction of a fourth floor.
Mayor Sinclair told the RJR News Centre that approval was not granted for the construction of a four story building.
He said he went with the building officer to do an inspection and found out that they were constructing a fourth floor and three blocks.
This is in breach of the approval given by the St. James Parish Council.
Mayor Sinclair said they also found that two of the block exceeded the height restrictions.
"We'll be governed by the Town and Country Planning Act so in this case where they have a fourth floor, they have to remove the floor because that is what the stop and enforcement notice will be requiring, that you comply with your permit," he said.
The RIU hotel is being built at Mahoe Bay close to the Sangster International Airport and is in the direct flight path of air traffic; a situation which necessitated the three floor restriction by National Environmental Planning Agency and the St James Parish Council.
