Police and residents will this morning resume their search for two people who were washed away in the Wag Water river in St. Mary on Thursday afternoon.

The two, a man and a woman, were swept away sometime before 3 o'clock.

Nicholas Johnson told Radio Jamaica News that his niece, 19-year-old Chrisan Stephens, was among a group that went to the river in Castleton when tragedy struck.

"While they were there enjoying the water, the little sister said to her that she is ready. But by the time she (Chrisan) was supposed to come out of the water, the river came down, wash her off the rock, and then while she was washing away a gentleman was trying to save her. By time he was trying to save her, the water came along and wash him away too. So both of them wash downstream," he explained.

The uncle said he did not know the man who tried to save his niece.

Mr. Johnson noted that the police were assisting residents with the search but it was later called off due to visibility issues.

The incident happened days after a man and woman were washed away in a Gully in Waltham Park, St. Andrew. The woman was rescued but the body of the 18-year-old man was found the following day.
