Senators to meet with IC next week for sensitisation on statutory declarations

Senate President Tom Tavares-Finson

President of the Senate Tom Tavares-Finson says members of the Senate are to meet with officials of the Integrity Commission next week.

He made the announcement during Friday's sitting of the Senate.

It comes a day after the Integrity Commission complained that parliamentarians have failed to respond to an invitation to attend a virtual sensitisation session at their convenience.

The anti-corruption body says it wrote to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate on December 10, 2024.

It said the letter was also copied to the Chairman of the Parliament's Integrity Commission Oversight Committee, Edmund Bartlett, and to the Clerk to the Houses of Parliament.

The IC said the session would include a presentation on completing the Statutory Declaration Form and provide an opportunity for parliamentarians to ask questions about the examination process.

The IC said the initiative was designed, in part, to support the preparation for the 2024 statutory declaration in-take period, which started on January 2, 2025, and will end on March 31, 2025.

On Friday, the Senate president said he has now responded to the commission.

"It is proposed to have [the meeting] next week Friday at 9 o'clock subject to the availability of the officer from the Integrity Commission, and everyone is invited to that meeting. It will be held under the time usually reserved for the Standing Orders Committee. So the Standing Orders Committee is inviting everybody to join us then," he announced.
