Severe Weather Alert issued as tropical storm forms over Caribbean

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has issued a Severe Weather Alert effective until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.  
     
This as Tropical Storm Matthew formed near the eastern Caribbean Wednesday morning.
      
Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Matthew could become a hurricane by Friday.   
     
According to the Met Service, the storm could move closer to Jamaica and pose a direct threat to the island.
      
Fishers on the cays and banks are advised to commence preparations with a view to evacuation, should it become necessary.     
     
The Meteorological Service says it will continue to closely monitor this system.
       
At 10:00 a.m. the centre was located near southeast St. Lucia and moving towards the west, near 33 kilometres per hour.
     
A westward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.     
     
On the forecast track, the centre of Tropical Storm Matthew will move through the Windward Islands during the next couple of hours, and move over the southern and central Caribbean Sea through Friday.
    
Maximum sustained winds are near 95 kilometres per hour with higher gusts.
