Shericka Jackson fails to advance to 200m Olympic semi-final

By Kayon Raynor

Freshly minted 100-metre bronze medallist and medal favourite for the 200m metres Shericka Jackson has missed out on a place in the semi-final of the half-lap at the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo.

Running in lane two, Jackson, who has a season's best of 21.82 seconds done at the national trials last month, ran too easy approaching the finish line and was out leaned by Dalia Kaddari of Italy.

Both were accredited with a time of 23.26 seconds, but the Italian was credited with the third automatic spot, meaning that Jackson missed out on one of the three non-automatic spots into the semi-finals.

Jamaica’s medal hopes now rest with 100m gold medallist and reigning Olympic 200m Champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who both made easy progress.

Fraser-Pryce took control of heat two coming off the turn to cruise to the finish line in 22.22 seconds.

Thompson-Herah also ran conservatively to finish third in heat six with 22.86 seconds.

The semifinals are set for 5:25 a.m. on Monday Jamaica time.
