RJR's Giovanni Dennis reporting from the venue of the PNP NEC meeting

Following months of speculation, Portia Simpson Miller announced on Sunday that she will quit the office of Leader of the Opposition on April 2.

That will follow the selection of a new president of the opposition People's National Party at a Special Delegates Conference on March 26.

Nomination for the post of president opens on Monday, February 6 and will close on Friday, February 10.

She confirmed her departure plans at a meeting of the National Executive Council of the PNP in Mandeville, Manchester.

Although she is stepping down as PNP President, Mrs Simpson Miller said she will remain as Member of Parliament for South West St Andrew.
