Snow storms affecting New York area flights to Jamaica

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has revealed that some flights to Jamaica from New York's major airports may be affected on Saturday by a significant winter storm.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at the New York airports as the winter storm descends on the city and neighbouring regions.

New York City and surrounding areas are in line to get 15cm to 23cm of snow, with a winter-storm warning in effect until 1:00 p.m., Saturday.

More than 1,700 flights across the United States were cancelled as at 3.12 p.m., Friday.

This resulted in some delays on Friday, Mr Bartlett said.

He's expecting further flight delays, noting that these delays are currently not significant, but things could change if the weather conditions deteriorate.

Roughly half of the 1,700 cancellations across the US were clustered around flights coming into or leaving the three major airports – LaGuardia, JFK, and New Jersey's Newark Airport.

Detroit, Philadelphia and Boston airports also saw cancellations and delays.

New York City issued a travel advisory for the duration of the storm as cold temperatures limit snow-melt, increasing the risk of slippery and hazardous road conditions.
