The Ministry of Health and Wellness will be hosting what it calls a solidarity cleanup day on Sunday at the hospitals damaged during Hurricane Melissa.
These are Black River Hospital, Savanna-la-Mar Public General, Falmouth Public General, Noel Holmes and Cornwall Regional.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton announced the initiative at a press briefing and the ministry's emergency operations centre on Saturday.
"Sunday, the health workers who have not been impacted by this storm in the five parishes have grouped together to go to the five hospitals for a cleanup, expressing solidarity and support to our healthcare workers and others on location in these five locations. So we have about 200 or so health staff. We're working with health staff in the first instance. We'll be leaving Kingston early morning, I think 6 a.m., supported by the JUTC," he said.
He noted that Sunday's cleanup will not be open to volunteers from the public for safety purposes.
"What I don't want - and the team decided on this, having explored it - is for 500 people to end up at the hospital site and the control around who does what and maybe put themselves in harm's way because there's a lot of debris. So we took a decision in the interest of doing something quickly to support the staff and to clean up the grounds, to use a controlled number. And then after that, we will manage further support," the minister advised.
