Several public health workers at Kingston Public Hospital and the St. Catherine Health Department are complaining that they are yet to receive their salaries, despite an assurance from the government that they would be paid ahead of Tropical Storm Melissa.
Radio Jamaica News has been informed that administrative staff, doctors, nurses and patient care assistants and porters have not been paid.
They were reportedly told that the issue would have been resolved on Friday, but they had not been paid up to Friday evening.
Techa Clarke-Griffiths, President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA), said it is unacceptable that the workers are not paid due to administrative tardiness.
"It cannot continue. There has to be some improvement in the system. We cannot continue to have our essential workers being treated in this way, and this is not now. We have been complaining about it for a while now and I think we are at a boiling point, and we will not continue to accept this type of behaviour and unprofessionalism," she argued.
Mrs. Clarke-Griffiths also complained about what she said was poor communication to the staff.
"If there are challenges, let the staff know what is happening. They are essential workers and we have an impending storm and these persons are not able to provide for their families, yet they are expected to work beyond the normal working hours and to provide essential care? Totally unacceptable," she declared.
