St James parish council objects to call for scrap metal industry to be shut down

The St. James Parish Council is expressing reservations at a resolution from the St Catherine parish council where a call was made for the shutting down of the scrap metal industry.

In a letter to the St. Catherine Parish Council, the St James Council suggested that instead of closing down the trade, a strict monitoring system be implemented with the assistance of the police.

In January Chairman of the St. Catherine Parish Council and Mayor of Spanish Town Dr. Andrew Wheatley, had called on Industry Investment and Commerce Minister Karl Samuda, to officially close the scrap metal industry.

His call came against the background that thieves have started to prey on property owned by the Council.

Citing examples, the Mayor had stated that the railings from a cemetery, plus the fittings to a billboard owned by the council were stolen.
