St. Vincent and the Grenadines goes to the polls today

Voters in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are voting in a general election today in which 79-year-old Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is seeking an unprecedented sixth consecutive term in office.

The election is expected to be closely fought between the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) in power since 2001 and the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP).

In the last general election, the ULP secured nine of the 15 parliamentary seats, even though the NDP won the popular vote.

The ULP has centred its campaign on its economic track record.

The opposition, however, accuses the ULP of failure and broken promises, pointing to rising living costs and persistent unemployment, particularly among young people.

The NDP is promising more and better paid jobs, tougher action on crime and violence, and improvements in health care and infrastructure.

It has also pledged to introduce a citizenship by infrastructure investment.
