Stakeholders are set to meet Thursday to fast track the setting up of the Joint Industrial Council for security guards.
The parliamentary opposition and trade union leaders have called for the establishment of the Joint Industrial Council to protect the interests of security guards.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. on Wednesday underscored the government's commitment to the setting up of the council.
"The ministry will also continue its dialogue with the Jamaica Society for the Industrial Security to reaffirm our position as a government on the Joint Industrial Council and to increase the momentum for its establishment. We were to have some meetings, I believe about two or three weeks ago, but due to some exigencies from our other stakeholders, we were not able to meet them. But we are eager to advance these conversations," he said.
Mr. Charles said the terms of reference of the Council will be among the issues discussed in Thursday's meeting.
The Joint Industrial Council will comprise representatives of security guards, employers, civil society, and key government stakeholders.
Security companies set a deadline of April 1 this year to honour a court ruling which indicated that security guards are not contract workers but employees with all attendant benefits.
