The death toll from the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Suriname climbed to 14 today after more bodies were recovered from the facility.
President Chandrikapersad Santokhi said 10 bodies had been pulled from the mine following Monday's incident and that the temporarily constructed tunnel with a considerable depth had buried a number of gold miners.
He said a stricter and tighter approach would be undertaken to prevent a reoccurrence within the gold mining sector.
The authorities say if it becomes necessary, Suriname will request assistance from Brazil in the rescue operation.
