One person has been arrested in connection with fires which were deliberately set at the Retirement dump in St. James late last year.
The fires were lit on November 26, December 11 and December 20.
Customer Relations Officer at Western Parks and Markets, Sharnon Williams, told Thursday's meeting of the St. James Municipal Corporation that the fires "lasted less than eight hours" and were extinguished with onsite equipment and assistance from the Jamaica Fire brigade.
She said since the individual was arrested, the acts of arson have ceased.
Senator Charles Sinclair, Councillor for the Montego Bay North Eastern Division, said the arrest of the suspect should help in deterring people from lighting the Retirement dump.
"The nuisance that it causes, I say that it is bordering on some terrorist type of activity.... And I hope and I will pray that if there is sufficient evidence and the person is convicted, that they suffer the consequences, as harsh as it can be," he declared.
