The Bureau of Standards has announced that fuel pumps at three gas stations remain closed as there is still evidence of bad gas. They are located in St. James, Kingston and Clarendon.
A statement from the Bureau on Wednesday evening said, of the other twelve stations that were previously tested and reopened, pumps from three stations were reissued with notices of detention. Seals were placed on the affected pumps because they now contain high levels of contaminants. These stations are located in Kingston.
The gas station owners and their suppliers will be required to undertake the necessary corrective measures to ensure their petroleum products are within acceptable limits. The Bureau of Standards will conduct another round of sampling and testing to confirm that the products are acceptable for sale.
The Bureau has promised that in the future it will monitor imported petroleum products and conduct tests before they are released into the market. If a product fails the tests, it will not be allowed into the market.
The Bureau has also declared that gas station owners who contravene the notices of detention or tamper with the seals will be reported to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).
Under the Petroleum Quality Control Act, persons in breach can face fines up to $1M or five years in prison.
