Tougher COVID testing rules for travellers to the US

Air travellers to the United States will face tougher COVID-19 testing rules to try to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is working toward requiring all air travellers to the US be tested for COVID-19 within a day before boarding their flight.

Currently, those who are fully vaccinated may present a test taken within three days of boarding.

US officials have also ordered airlines to disclose passenger names and other information about those who have recently been in eight southern African countries.

A World Health Organization official said 24 countries may have reported cases of the variant so far but some of the early indications were that most cases were mild, with none severe.
