Taxi operators in St. Catherine who ply the Treadways to Linstead route have withdrawn their service in protest against the poor state of roads leading off the main thoroughfare.

The affected roads include Treadways, York Street, Cheese Field as well as Time and Patience.

The taxi operators have parked their vehicles along the Treadways main road forcing commuters to walk or seek alternative transportation.

The taxi operators were joined by residents who expressed frustration with their political representatives to have the roads fixed.

Taxi operator Kevin Johnson said the roads have been dug up over the years by the National Water Commission (NWC) to repair leaking pipes.

Mr. Johnson told RJR News that residents have been asked to be patient while the repairs are done.

He said they have now run out of patience as the pipes are again leaking causing further damage to the roads.

In the meantime, with the protest forcing some students to walk to school, the administration of McGrath High had to spring into action after a student fell ill on the way to school.

Claudiene Panton, principal of the institution, said the student was taken to the hospital.

She said attendance has also been affected by the protest as only 285 students, out of a population of 1,160, were at school.

Ms Panton added that 41 of the 65 teachers were able to get to school.

While she is in agreement that the roads are in a deplorable state, she is hopeful that the protest will not continue on Tuesday.

Sydney Rose, Councillor for the Treadways Division, said a representative of the National Works Agency (NWA) will be in the community Monday to begin preparatory works to fix the roads.
