Two cops fined for collecting money to release suspected criminals

Two Hanover-based policemen who were convicted of collecting money to release two suspects, one of whom was wanted for murder, were fined at their recent sentencing before the Hanover Parish Court.

Constables Shemroy Hewitt and Andre Drummond were each fined $500,000 or 21 months in prison after being convicted for soliciting and accepting money from the suspects.

Investigators reported that on January 3, 2017, the policemen were in Lucea, Hanover when they signalled a motor vehicle, with the suspects aboard, to stop.

Checks revealed that one of the men was wanted on suspicion for murder.

The other man reportedly had lottery scamming information in his possession.

The cops allegedly demanded $200,000 to release the men.

The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) carried out an investigation and the policemen were arrested.
