UNDP donates to dengue control programme

Jamaica is getting assistance with its dengue outbreak prevention and control programme.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is to hand over US$40,000 or J$3.7 million to the Ministry of Health for the programme.

The money will be used to purchase 18 fogging machines and a drum of  malathion.

Malathion is a pesticide widely used in mosquito eradication.

Last year the Ministry of Health recorded more than 5,000 clinically suspected cases of dengue fever with 746 being laboratory confirmed.

Ten deaths were confirmed from laboratory tests.
