UNFP launches post hurricane cash assistance programme in Jamaica

Labour & Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr.

The United Nations World Food Programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour & Social Security, has launched a cash assistance programme to support Jamaicans severely affected by Hurricane Melissa.

The programme is expected to reach about fifty thousand people and represents the next phase of the post-hurricane response, with the partners describing this as a shift in focus from emergency relief to recovery and resilience.

Labour & Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Junior says the initiative reflects the government's commitment to ensuring timely support reaches the most vulnerable.

World Food Programme Caribbean Director Brian Bogart says cash assistance gives families the flexibility to meet their food and essential needs while restoring dignity and independence after the loss of homes and livelihoods.
