University Hospital to be reconstructed

It has been announced that the University Hospital of  the West Indies (UHWI)  will be reconstructed, as one of several projects included in a Memorandum of Understanding for projects valued at J$60 billion to and J$70 billion.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday by the University of  the West Indies, Mona, and China Harbour Engineering Company.

The reconstruction of the University Hospital will result in the number of beds increasing from five hundred to one thousand, and modern facilities being provided.

Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson said it would be impossible to expand the offerings of  the School of Medicine without creating space for medical interns while ensuring that services are not compromised.

A student centre, including an auditorium, which will double as an indoor sports facility, and a small hotel, to replace the Mona Visitors Lodge, will be constructed as well.

College Common, for housing UWI staff,  will also be reconstructed and a coal fired electricity generation plant will be completed.
