Teachers in the Physical Education department at the Vauxhall High school are fearing for their safety
following an incident at the school.
An RJR News source reported that the teachers are upset at the way an incident involving a teacher and a student in the eleventh grade last Tuesday is being handled.
It is reported that a male Physical Education teacher accosted the male student after he was seen with a knife and a small quantity of ganja.
The teacher reprimanded the student who responded by hitting the teacher with a piece of board causing injury.
The teacher reportedly retaliated and hit the student, who was taken to hospital for treatment.
Allegations are that about 7 o'clock the same day, the student returned to the school compound with friends and set fire to the school's Physical Education Department.
Teachers at the school had called for a sit-in with the resumption of classes after the mid-term break Monday but this was reportedly refused by the principal, Angela Chaplin.
The source noted that the student's friends returned to the institution Monday and set another fire in a section of the compound.
The matter was reported to the police but our news centre was told that the Ministry of Education was only informed of the events Monday, despite a recently implemented requirement that all incidents of violence be reported.
Our news team visited the school on Tuesday morning but staff members were tight lipped about the incident, we were however told that the principal Angela Chaplin and an education officer were in a meeting.
We were also told that another meeting is to be held Tuesday involving members of the board and the head of the Parent Teachers' Association.
