A new and apparently more infectious variant of COVID-19 has been detected in the US after cases surged in China.
There is no evidence that the virus is more severe, according to the World Health Organization.
NB1.8.1 does have a greater ability to bind to human cells, which suggests the strain could be more transmissible.
