UWI, Mona to increase school fees

A report in Monday’s issue of the Trinidad Guardian newspaper said fees at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus will increase by 5.5 per cent over the current academic year. Fees at the St. Augustine, Trinidad, and Cave Hill, Barbados campuses will remain unchanged. The newspaper quoted a statement from the University Council which endorsed recommendations of the Sub-Committee on Tuition Fees with respect to 2013/2014 academic programmes.

It noted that the increase is below the inflation rate in Jamaica and represents a recovery of 20 per cent of economic costs.

Special concessionary fees for students from the Association of Caribbean States were approved for three years initially, as part of UWI’s thrust to widen access to students from outside the CARICOM region.

The Council also decided to undertake a comprehensive review of the decision-making process on tuition fees.
