Vehicular access has been restored on four roads in north east St. Elizabeth that were blocked on Thursday morning by residents frustrated about the closure of the Raheen main road.

The Raheen road was closed by the National Works Agency after a section collapsed following heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Rafael last week.

The current road condition is disrupting the commute between Maggotty and Balaclava.

But, upset that no work has started on the breakaway, residents of surrounding communities constructed unmanned barricades using felled trees and stones.

Superintendent Coleridge Minto, Commanding Officer for the St. Elizabeth Division, says the police were alerted to the protest about 5 a.m.

"On arrival to the various locations, no one was seen. However, it was observed that a number of trees were cut down and used to block the major corridors. The roads that were affected include the Maggotty to Siloah main road, the Raheen to Balaclava main road, Balaclava to Brae's River main road in the vicinity of Bogue Hill. All of these roads are now partially cleared and allowing for single lane traffic," said Superintendent Minto.
