Woman injured in partial collapse of apartment building in Torrington Park

Joy Moore, a resident of Torrington Park, and an Inspector of Police with the Kingston Western Police Division

An elderly woman was injured and four other persons were rescued after a section of an apartment building in Torrington Park, St. Andrew, collapsed Sunday afternoon.

Rescue teams, who were quick on the scene told Radio Jamaica News that they managed to secure the area, rescuing those who were trapped in the building.

Joy Moore, who resides in the complex, said she witnessed the collapas of a staircase, which led to the elderly woman, who was seated on it at the time, being injured.

"Luckily she was sitting down," she observed, fearing how much worse the impact of the collapse might have been on the already frail senior citizen.

Ms Moore added that the physical defects in the building had been observed several years ago and had still not been attended to by the agent of the state which is responsible for the low income housing complex.

"The engineer checked all the houses, all the rooms and they put it (the contract for rapair) to tender," she explained, but no work has still not begun.
